Rainfall in July

Rainfall in July
woodpigeons waddling
across the wet moss
of an unkempt lawn
tree branches bending
dripping their tears
for sunshine delayed
Two hawks soar above
alert to any prey
hidden by plant pots
sheltered by bushes
while lesser birds flit
from one watery
twig to another
driven mad by this
unsettled weather

Rainfall in July
soil drunk with moisture
flowers tipsily
displaying colours
each shrub bawdily
bursting out in green
eager to attract
admiring glances
On the patio
only vacant chairs
an empty table
an unkicked football
Inside no sound but
the steady drum beat
of summer’s fingers
on Perspex roofing.
